US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met in Jerusalem on Friday morning with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, later tweeting: “Netanyahu and I had a productive meeting on efforts to counter the Iranian regime’s malign influence as well as regional developments and other issues related to Israel’s security.” Iran has been involved in a sharp spike in tensions with the United States, European countries and Gulf nations, though what most worries Israel – aside from Tehran’s purported drive to develop nuclear weapons – is the Islamic Republic’s activities in neighboring Syria, from where the Trump Administration has been pulling back forces, leading to the current anti-Kurd incursion by Turkey. The heads of Israel’s National Security Council and Mossad spy agency participated in the discussions with Pompeo alongside Netanyahu. When asked by reporters what he thought about the recent developments in Syria, the prime minister replied only that “we hope things will turn out for the best.”
