BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:10 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) began an operation on Sunday to clear the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) hideouts west of Deir Ezzor city.
Backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF), the Syrian Arab Army concentrated its efforts along the Deir Ezzor-Sukhnah Highway, where the Islamic State has been wreaking havoc these last two months.
In particular, the Syrian Army is combing through the area around the town of Al-Shoula, which has seen a recent increase in activity by the Islamic State.
Al-Shoula was liberated by the Syrian Arab Army during their large-scale offensive against the Islamic State in 2018. Since its liberation, the town has witnessed a number of attacks launched by the Islamic State sleeper cells.
