BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:00 P.M.) – A convoy carrying Lebanon’s Minister of Displaced Affairs Saleh Al-Gharib came under attack inside the Mount Lebanon Governorate on Sunday, resulting in the death of at least one person and the hospitalization of two others.
“We were on our way in the area of Kabrshmoun and were surprised by a score of bullets,” Al-Gharib told Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA).
Al-Ghaib stressed “keen concern for civil peace and the unity of the Druze and their solidarity,” while calling for self-restraint in wake of the bloodshed that occurred.
“We do not resort to the use of blood in politics,” he added.
Al-Gharib is a close ally to the Lebanese Democratic Party leader, Talal Arslan, who is a strong voice in the March 8th political bloc.
Arslan and his rival, Walid Jumblatt of the Progressive Socialist Party, are considered two of the most powerful Druze politicians inside Lebanon.
